Shipping desktop app updates is painful. Every platform has its own installer format, its own update mechanism, and its own quirks. Electron makes this worse by shipping a full Chromium binary with every release — meaning your users download 250+ MB every time you push a fix.

Velopack promises to fix this. Here's what it actually does, and when it's worth adopting.

What Velopack Does

Velopack is a cross-platform installer and auto-update framework. It replaces Squirrel (Windows), Sparkle (macOS), and whatever custom update logic you've duct-taped together for Linux.

The pitch is simple: one tool for packaging, installing, and updating your app on every platform. The killer feature is binary delta updates — instead of downloading the full 260 MB app, users download only what changed. For a typical patch, that's 10-50 MB.

It works by packing your app into .nupkg packages (yes, NuGet — it's a .NET tool). When you release a new version alongside an old one, it generates a delta. The client-side UpdateManager checks for updates, downloads the smallest available package (delta or full), and applies it.

What's Good

Delta updates are genuinely useful. If you ship frequently — daily dev builds, weekly releases — your users will thank you. Smaller downloads, faster installs, less bandwidth.

The API is clean. Three calls: check, download, apply. No event-driven spaghetti. No platform-specific branches in your update logic (JS API Docs).

One packaging step per platform. vpk pack takes your built app directory and produces an installer plus update packages. macOS gets a .pkg, Windows gets a .exe, and both get the delta infrastructure for free.

What's Not that Good

It requires the .NET SDK. Your CI pipeline needs dotnet installed just to run vpk. That's an extra 1-2 minutes per build and a dependency you wouldn't otherwise have. For a JavaScript project, this feels heavy.

The native .node module fights with Vite. Velopack ships a native binary that Vite's bundler can't handle. You have to externalize it from Rollup and exclude it from asar packaging. It works, but it's the kind of workaround that breaks silently on upgrades (reference).

Linux is on its own. Velopack supports Linux in theory, but the ecosystem is fragmented enough (DEB, RPM, AppImage, Flatpak) that you'll likely keep your existing Linux pipeline anyway. So you end up with a hybrid: Velopack for Windows and macOS, something else for Linux. That's not simpler — it's two systems instead of one.

It's pre-1.0. The project is active and well-maintained, but APIs can still change. The JS/Electron bindings are newer than the .NET core, and some documented methods don't exist in the actual package. You'll be reading source code, not docs.

When to Adopt

Velopack makes sense if:

Your users are on slow or metered connections and complain about update sizes

You ship multiple times per day and want fast, incremental updates

You're starting a new Electron project and can build around it from day one

It's harder to justify if:

Your current update pipeline works and users aren't complaining

You only ship weekly or less frequently

You'd be adding it to an existing project with its own update infrastructure

The delta updates are the real value. Everything else — the installers, the cross-platform CLI — is nice but not dramatically better than what Electron Forge already provides.

The Bottom Line

Velopack solves a real problem. But for most Electron apps, the update pipeline is a "set it and forget it" piece of infrastructure. If yours is working, the migration cost probably outweighs the benefit today. Keep an eye on it — once it hits 1.0 and the tooling matures, it could become the obvious default choice for Electron updates.
